Formative assessment is concerned with two concepts - assessment for teaching and learning and assessment for learning. As identified by Cowie and Bell (1999), two models of formative assessment are used - planned formative assessment and interactive formative assessment. In this essay I will be focussing on assessment for learning and interactive formative assessment only. Assessment for learning involves assessment tasks or activities that are intended to improve and accelerate learning (Sadler, 1998) through encouraging students and teachers to identify where learners are at currently, where they need to be and how they can set goals to enable themselves to achieve the next step in their learning journey (Assessment Reform Group [ARG], 2002). Formative assessment’s goal, as outlined by The New Zealand Ministry of Education (1993), is to ‘modify and enhance learning and understanding† (p. 48). Assessment for learning does this by enabling students to develop self regulating learning behaviours which foster motivation, engagement and success with learning. The assessment of learning process aims to help students identify where their level of achievement lies, recognise where they need to be and encourages them to think about the steps they need to take to get there through the use of four key concepts. These include feedback, goal setting, self assessment and peer assessment.
