Studies conducted with self-identified TV addicts have shown that those considering themselves addicted to television were more generally unhappy, anxious, and withdrawn than other people who watch television, and used television watching to distract themselves from negative moods, worries and fears, and from boredom.?? They may be somewhat more likely to be solitary, hostile, and lacking the capacity for or interest in social connections with others, although it is unclear whether there is a causal link between these personality characteristics and addiction. Additionally, there is a growing popular trend toward binge-watching television in our culture, which may be exacerbating television addiction.?? Other characteristics that have been associated with self-identified TV addiction are binge-watching, susceptibility  to boredom, and the use of TV to fill time. The TV is used  as a way to avoid rather than seek out stimulation. In addition, people who become addicted to TV tend to have poor attentional control, guilt, and are prone to daydreams involving fear of failure. Risks Research has revealed disturbing evidence that excessive TV watching is associated with a shorter lifespan.??  Those in the highest risk category watched an average of 6 hours of television a day and had a lifespan nearly 5 years shorter than people who did not watch TV. But does TV itself cause a shorter lifespan? Perhaps not. The study’s authors have stated that the results may be caused by something else associated with excessive TV watching, such as overeating, lack of exercise, or depression.?? Indeed, there are several addictive behaviors that lend themselves to hours of TV watching. Marijuana addiction and heroin addiction both tend to lead to many hours of sitting around doing nothing.?? People with chronic pain who are hooked on painkillers are often limited in their mobility so can’t get out and about. And while the focus of research into shopping addiction tends to be retail stores and online shopping, it may neglect one of the most compulsive scenarios for the shopaholic â€" the shopping channel.?? TV may well be addictive, along with other forms of media, such as video game addiction, internet addiction, cybersex, and even smartphone addiction. Remember, they had no science to explain anything, so they had to make up stuff that seems ridiculous to us today. They feared what they didnt know and understand, therefore seeking any kind of solution . . . in this case their fear led to The Salem witch trial. Why did the Salem witch trial occur? Were these trials appropriate? Or were they truly a Devils work? The Salem Witch Trials might have occurred for a variety of reasons such as peoples ignorance that led to superstitions. In The Crucible the people of Andover realize that the accusations of witchcraft are completely false and steeped in superstition. This causes the townspeople to overthrow the court. This is revealed by Parris in Act 4 on page 1266 when he states, Andover have thrown out the court, they say, and will have no part in witchcraft. None have ever been taken as far as superstition was in Salem when people who were believed to be witches were hanged. The superstition that the devil revealed his dark deeds through witches turned superstition into fear for the townspeople of Salem. This fear led the townspeople to hang innocent citizens in Salem. One must wonder, could this historical event b e repeated in todays society if a modern superstition causes hysteria? Hopefully a superstition will never be taken as far as it was in Salem, Massachusetts. Two kinds of evidence of witchcraft were considered less persuasive, although they seem to have influenced certain New England magistrates. One was anger followed by mischief – a sidelong glance by the suspected witch followed quickly by an accident to the victim. The last and most fragile evidence, testimony by the afflicted that were â€Å"visited† by some demonic form (Salem DBQ 9). In my opinion this is not real and valid evidence. Two reasons why I say this, for one, I dont fully understand because in my mind its saying, that if you look suspicious or do suspicious things someone is allowed to follow you and if they believe you are practicing witchcraft they have the right to accuse you and send you to jail and give you a trial. Now if I’m right I think that is very and I mean very stupid because if your neighbor is the one accusing you then the your land will become a free for all and that neighbor will have most of your land and become a little more powerful in the social status. Secondly those â€Å" afflicted â€Å" girls could have been faking and lying about what they seen or did therefor their evidence is also invalid. When hysteria mixed with family rivalries fomented the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692-93, more than 200 people were accused unjustly of practicing witchcraft Eventually, the colonial government acknowledged that the trials were a mistake, and compensated the families of those convicted. But that vindication came too late for the 19 defendants who were executed. A 20th, Giles Corey, was pressed to death when he refused to plead. As many as 13 others died in prison. (Joseph E. Baker ) I believe the authorities took those girls too serious without believable evidence. There was a theory that a fungus called ergot can sometimes infect rye grains. Rye grain is a grass grown extensively as a grain and as a forage crop. The fungus produces some chemicals which are very similar to LSD. LSD is one of the major drugs made up of hallucinogen. It was discovered in 1938 and is one of the most potent mood- changing chemical. So this whole time the girls could have been on LSD the whole time hallucinating the whole time or acting. Either way I dont believe that the â€Å"devil† had anything to do with the Salem witch trials at all. The Salem Witch Trials is an example of a tragic time in history. This event still fascinates our imagination to this day, and shows us what can happen if we make decisions based on fear and ignorance. How has our modern judicial system changed? Would today courts allow evidence such as mass hysteria, specters, intangible evidence, forced confessions and here say†to convict a person of a crime? At what point in history do you thinkwitch craft stopped being a crime? It has been three hundred and twenty one years since the Salem Witch Trials started. Since that time, countless groups and individuals have come together to educate people regarding this tragic time in history and have worked tirelessly to ensure what happened in our past, cannot be repeated. These Transnational Issues are the Environment, Transboundary Haze, Transnational Crime ASEAN keeps close relations with other countries by having each member country to coordinate with the other different countries that do not belong in ASEAN. These other countries are Australia, China, European Union (EU), Canada, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the United States of America. Peer to Peer Assessment Strategy for Groups Group work is a great strategy to use in the secondary classroom in order to to improve student learning.  But group work sometimes requires a form of problem solving on its own. While the goal in these classroom collaborations is to equally distribute the work to solve a problem or produce a product, there maybe a student (or two) who does not contribute as much as the other members of the group. This student may let his or her fellow students do the bulk of the work, and this student may even share the group grade. This student is the  slacker  in the group, a member who can frustrate the other members of the group. This is especially a problem if the some of the group work is done outside the classroom. So what can a teacher do about assessing this slacker student who does not collaborate with others or who contributes little to the finished product? How can a teacher be fair and award the appropriate grade to those members of a group who have worked effectively? Is equal participation in group work even possible?   The Reasons for Using Group Work in Class While these concerns might make a teacher think about giving up group work entirely, there are still powerful reasons for using groups in class: Students take ownership of the subject matter.Students develop communication and teamwork skills.Students work together and teach each other.   Students can bring   individual skill sets  to a group.Students learn to plan more effectively and manage their time. Here is one more reason to use groups Students can learn to how to assess their work and the work of others. At the secondary level, the success of group work can be measured in many different ways, but the most common is through a grade or points. Instead of having the teacher determine how a groups participation or project will be scored, teachers can grade the project as a whole and then turn the individual participant grades over to the group as a lesson in negotiation. Turning this responsibility over to the students can address the problem of grading the slacker in the group by having student peers distribute points based on the evidence of work contributed. Designing the Point or Grade System: If the teacher chooses to use peer to peer grade distribution, the teacher must be clear that the project under review will be graded to meet standards outlined in a rubric. The total number of points available for the completed project, however, would be based on the number of people in each group. For example, the top score (or an A) awarded to a student for a project or participation that meets the highest standard could be set at 50 points. Students confer with the teacher for the distribution of points supported by evidence. In these negotiations, all students are responsible for providing evidence of the work they did in completing the project.   Peer to peer assessment can be a motivating experience. When teachers may not be able to motivate students, this form of peer pressure may get the desired results. It is recommended that the negotiations for awarding points be supervised by the teacher to ensure fairness. The teacher can retain the ability to override a groups decision. They clearly define a person’s wish to decline life-support or medical treatment in certain circumstances, usually when death is imminent. Generally, a living will takes effect when a person becomes terminally ill, permanently unconscious or conscious with irreversible brain damage. A living will also allows a person to state with particularity the forms of treatment are wanted and not wanted. For example, if a one does not want artificial life support, then sign the living will stating that desire. It is also important to discuss your beliefs and wishes with you family, spouse and other people whose opinions you respect, such as clergy, physicians, attorney or an accountant. Living wills are recognized in every state, but each state has different requirements. If someone is interested in making a living will, contact an expert in the state that you live in, such as a hospital, local agency on aging or local bar association. To help ensure that the living will be honored, give copies to family members, physicians, lawyer and other involved in caring for the person’s welfare. Federal law now requires most health care facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, HMOs and home health agencies) to ask patients if they have a living will or would like to complete one. Can Medical Care Legally Be Stopped If There Is NO Living Will? When there is no written document, a spouse or close family member may still request that treatment be withheld if the patient cannot do so, but the request could be denied. Why I Love Disrespecting My Elders Essay

Coming from a Filipino family, my parents taught me to use â€Å"po† and â€Å"opo† every time I will be talking to elders and of course, to never dare to talk back— constantly telling me that these show respect. In addition, my former teachers would also repeat to me that I should always respect my elders. Since I was too young then and still incapable of thinking thoroughly, I used to believe that was the right thing to do. It was a good thing I realized it is not. Do not get me wrong. I value the word respect a lot that I see it as if it is something sacred. Respect for me is the third most precious, priceless gift a person could possibly give to someone (no matter what their age is), next to love and time. Therefore for me, earning one’s respect is a privilege. A privilege that should only be granted to those people who truly deserve them; a privilege that could only be gained if one has done an act worthy of praise and admiration. Unfortunately, many Filipinos think of respect as something that it is mandatory to give to anyone who is older than them. But does it feel right showing respect to people you have seen doing unjust things to others only because they are older? Because in my case, it surely gives me a nausea when I am expected to greet a teacher â€Å"Good morning!† when I already heard her telling snide remarks to one of her students before. I also disrespect people who are in position but clearly have no idea of what their job is about and what they should be doing. I have encountered a number of secretaries or persons in authority who would converse with me on formal matters and would speak to and address me as if I was just their high school friend, their little sister, and the worst of all, was one of their maids. As persons in authority who are engaged to talking to people every day, they should be mindful enough of how they would treat their clients. No matter how high one’s position is, I would never respect him if he acts like an uneducated person who is rude, arrogant, and impolite. And if in case he gets hurt by my usual disrespectful acts—being frank and straight-forward of my thoughts—I would never apologize, because he needs to know that what he was doing with his clients is wrong, and someone has to point it out to him, no matter how harsh it may sound. Lastly, I disrespect them because they are not always right and they could be corrected. Being older does not mean one is already more intelligent, although they could be wiser due to their  experiences, but still there is a possibility that some of today’s generation is smarter than of their parents’ generation. So I believe that letting the elders do away with their wrong philosophies in life would do no good to any side of the parties. I believe that having the courage to disrespect my elders does not only mean that I could step up for myself and express my opinion on what I think is right, but also it could help the elders to think and reflect more on their views of things, which for me is a good thing. To sum everything up, all I want to say is: the reason why I love disrespecting older people is because I care for them. I want them to become better individuals for themselves and for the people they are interacting with every day in their own personal lives. All that for the hope that someday, everyone would become aware of how they affect their community and see their mistakes and realize what they must do to become better citizens of this country.

Most individuals tend to base their understanding of the world solely on what they know; however they acquire this knowledge mostly through experience which can be deemed as problematic by different philosophers.
